Steady is built around a simple promise: your recovery is yours. This policy explains exactly what data Steady collects, what we do with it, and what we never do.

What Steady is, in privacy terms

Steady is an AI sober coach mobile app. It works in two modes:

  • Anonymous (default): no account, no email, no name. Your data lives on your device. We use a randomly generated device identifier to associate your conversations with your install — that identifier is not linked to you in any way we can see.
  • Synced: if you choose to create an account to sync across devices, we use Clerk to handle authentication. We see only your email address and a Clerk user ID. We never see passwords.

What we collect

When you use Steady anonymously

  • Your conversations with the coach (so the coach has memory across the conversation)
  • Your check-ins and reset events (so the app can show your streak)
  • Your onboarding answers (so the coach can meet you where you are)
  • A device identifier (a random string generated on first launch)

When you create an account

Everything above, plus:

  • Your email address (only used for login and account recovery)
  • A Clerk user ID (used to associate your data with your account)

What we never collect

  • Your name (unless you type it into a conversation, in which case it lives only in that conversation)
  • Your phone number
  • Your location
  • Your contacts
  • Anything from your camera, microphone, or other apps

Your IP address is briefly seen by our server (as it must be for any internet request) and used only for rate limiting. It is not logged or stored.

What we do with your data

Conversations with the coach

Your messages are sent to Anthropic's Claude API to generate the coach's responses. Anthropic processes the request and returns the response. Per Anthropic's policy, your conversations are not used to train models. We store the conversation in our database so you can return to it later.

Crisis safety logging

If you write something that our system identifies as indicating a possible crisis (suicidal ideation, severe withdrawal, overdose), we log a record that this happened. The record contains a hashed reference to the message, the severity category, and the timestamp. We never log the message content itself. This logging exists so we can monitor whether the safety features are working and improve them. It is not used for any other purpose.

Pattern analysis (Overseer feature)

If you use the Overseer feature, your conversation history and check-ins are sent to Anthropic to generate pattern observations. Same policy as above: not used for training, returned to you, stored in our database.

What we share

Nothing, except what's required for the app to work:

  • Anthropic processes your messages to generate coach responses
  • Clerk handles authentication if you create an account
  • Our hosting provider (Replit) runs our server

We do not sell your data. We do not share it with advertisers. We do not share it with insurance companies, employers, family members, or anyone else.

Your rights and controls

  • Use Steady without an account. This is the default. We can't connect your data to you because we don't know who you are.
  • Export your data. Settings → Export. You'll get a JSON file containing everything we have about your account.
  • Delete your data. Settings → Delete Account (if signed in) or uninstall the app (if anonymous). Account deletion cascades through every record we have for you. The crisis safety log entries persist, but with your user reference severed — they cannot be linked back to you.

Changes to this policy

If we change this policy, we'll update this page and note the date at the top. Material changes will be announced in the app.
